What is power flushing

Power flushing is a highly effective way to deep-clean your central heating system, removing built-up sludge, rust, and debris that can clog pipes, radiators, and boilers.

Over time, these deposits reduce efficiency, cause cold spots, and lead to noisy radiators or rising energy bills. Our power flushing service uses a specialised pump to circulate a chemical cleaner throughout your system, restoring performance and improving heat distribution.

If your heating takes too long to warm up or isn’t working as efficiently as it should, power flushing could be the answer. Get in touch with Smart Energy & Heating for expert advice and a free quote.

How does it work?

Because the water in a central heating system is always pumped in the same direction, iron filings, sludge, oil and grease build up within each radiator in your system. This has a detrimental effect on the efficiency of both your radiators and your boiler – in fact – your whole central heating system, reducing it’s life expectancy.

When a system is professionally power flushed, the system is flushed in different directions, agitating the sludge and debris, so the system can be drained of the deposits. When flushing a system, special chemicals are used to ensure the breakdown of the sludge inside the system, prior to the deposits being removed.

Power flushing your Central Heating system can also extend the lifespan of your boiler. We will assess your system and recommend the right treatment.

Your heating system may need a power flush if you notice any of these signs:

Power flushing is a deep-cleaning process that removes sludge, rust, and other debris from your central heating system. Over time, these contaminants can build up and reduce efficiency, cause cold spots in radiators, and increase your energy bills. Power flushing restores proper circulation and improves overall system performance.
Common signs include cold spots on radiators, noisy pipework, slow heating, or higher-than-usual energy bills. If your boiler frequently needs bleeding or parts keep failing, it may be time for a power flush. We can assess your system and advise whether it’s necessary.

The process typically takes between 4 to 8 hours, depending on the size and condition of your system. Larger or heavily clogged systems may take longer. We always aim to complete the job efficiently with minimal disruption.

No—when carried out by trained professionals, power flushing is completely safe. We use specialised equipment and approved cleaning chemicals to protect your system while thoroughly clearing out any debris.
